Thermal Energy Storages in Vehicles for Fuel Efficiency Improvement

Feasibilities of heat and cold storage technologies for vehicles were discussed for improvement of vehicle fuel efficiency. Energy performance of a plug-in cold thermal energy storage system, in which ice slurry is produced at a stationary chiller and charged into a tank in a vehicle for cabin and cargo cooling, was discussed. Energy balance of the plug-in system was compared with onboard heat pump for a cargo truck and passenger car. Thermal storage density of media of thermal energy storage was a key parameter for efficient operation of the plug-in system. The plug-in system is suitable for cargo truck having heavier load capacity than 2 ton. Higher energy storage density was required for the use in a passenger car. It was shown that the application of heat and cold storage technologies to vehicles including electric cars had possibility to enhance the reductions of fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
